When is PPFG not enough? The Poroelastic Equation Approach to Defining the Drilling Window

Pore-pressure and fracture-gradient predictions (the PPFG study) are very important in ensuring a successful and safe drilling operation. When it comes to drilling more challenging and complex wells, which can be highly deviated, depleted reservoirs or a tectonically complex region as an example , companies should expand their parameters to get a complete picture. The interaction between borehole excavation with far-field and near-wellbore stresses come into play and affects the decision on drilling window and well planning.  This webinar will introduce the theory behind resolving stresses using the poroelastic equation, and interactively show how to generate the wellbore stability window in the RokDoc software suite. We will:

  • discuss when and why only pore pressure and fracture gradient predictions are not enough to define drilling mud weight window
  • examine the elements of a 1D Mechanical Earth Model (MEM)
  • consider the far-field and near-wellbore stresses and their impact on drilling
  • showcase the wellbore stability workflow in RokDoc
