Seismic Amplitudes and AVO Demystified
Session 1: Moving Beyond Structure
Traditional seismic interpretation often stops at mapping structure—but the full story lies in seismic amplitude and AVO . This session explores how a more quantitative approach to interpretation can unlock deeper geological insight by linking seismic response directly to rock and fluid properties.
We’ll walk through the fundamental properties of rocks and how and why they drive a seismic response.
- Elastic log calculation (Bulk Modulus, Shear Modulus, Poisson’s Ratio, Acoustic Impedance, etc.)
- Zero-offset seismic generation – understanding the convolutional model assumption and what drives the seismic wiggles we interpret
- Multi-well cross-plotting for data QC and anomaly detection – looking for fluid and lithology responses in elastic properties that indicate we should see a response
- Offset dependent reflectivity and AVO synthetic seismogram calculation – how do we expect our reservoir-seal pairs to look in the far stack versus the near stack – will fluids be more distinct and anomalous in the far stack? Is AVO going to be useful?
