Ron graduated from Imperial College in 1986 with a BSc in Petroleum Geology, joining BP Exploration later that year as an applications specialist in the Middle East, North Africa and Canada Asset. In 1988 he switched disciplines, taking up a post as a mining geologist with Dominion Mining, in the Northern Territory, Australia. Returning to BP Exploration in 1990, Ron was posted to Yemen, in the role of system manager and computer geoscientist. On his return to London, he joined the System Integration group, managing BP's move from VAX to Unix platforms. He then returned to exploration, working as a geoscientist within the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan and Abu Dhabi Assets, and then as a petrophysicist within the Well Intervention Team in Sunbury. In 2006, Ron joined Ikon Science, initially as head trainer, and latterly as a member of the Quantitative Interpretation Team, generating and evaluating prospects for various oil companies.
