Rock Physics for Quantitative Interpretation: How to Think Like a Rock Physicist - 3 Days Course

Course Overview:

Rock physics is a key element of quantitative interpretation. Rock physics is used through all stages of the seismic reservoir characterisation workflow, from quality control on petrophysical evaluation to interpretation of elastic properties from seismic inversion.

This course will provide the attendee with the knowledge to participate actively and intelligently in Quantitative Interpretation studies, and will cover the basics of rock physics by examining the link between reservoir properties and seismic amplitudes via the elastic properties of the rocks.

It is is aimed at beginner/intermediate rock physics level, with no prior rock physics knowledge required.  Also, no access to, or knowledge of, any geoscience application is required.  It is an interactive course, with discussion being encouraged, and will benefit any professional involved in using seismic data to understand the subsurface, including seismic processors, petrophysicists, seismic interpreters, quantitative interpreters, geophysicists and geologists.

After attending the course, delegates should be able to:

  • Understand & apply rock physics tools.
  • Interpret rock physics cross-plots in terms of geological trends.
  • Build a rock physics template for a specific case.
  • Perform fluid and lithology substitution during prospect evaluation characterisation.
