Board Members

Peter Dolan

Non Executive Chairman
Peter Dolan, a B.Sc. and PhD geology graduate ( University College London-Carbonate sedimentology) , has been involved in international exploration for over 40 years; initially as an employee of Mobil, Ball & Collins (assimilated into Premier Oil) and then as a founder and director of JEBCO Seismic Ltd. He was subsequently a founder and director of Dolan & Associates, IKODA and Fusion Investments Limited; companies which spawned IKON Science, Troy Ikoda, (purchased by RPS plc), Virgo Exploration (now part of EnCore plc) and Fusion Oil & Gas.

Peter is an explorer and geologist. In addition to technical consulting for oil company clients of all sizes, he has advised a large number of financial institutions on mergers and acquisition activities, governments on the development of appropriate legislation as well as co-ordinated multi-disciplinary exploration teams. His geographic experience spans the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia and Far East. Peter has lived and worked in Canada, Libya, Indonesia and the UK.

After 25 years of consulting, Peter reverted to a role in active exploration and became a foundation shareholder and the Chairman of Fusion Oil & Gas plc. He resigned from Fusion in March 2004 after it was taken over by Sterling Energy plc. He then collaborated with ex-Fusion colleagues to establish a new UK-registered company, Ophir Energy Company Limited which has successfully raised start-up capital and which is building a significant portfolio of assets principally in Africa.

Martyn Millwood Hargrave

Chief Executive Officer
Martyn has more than 26 years experience in new ventures and technology application in the oil and gas industry specialising in introduction of new thinking and new interpretation technology, he founded Ikon Science in 2001.

Prior to IKON Science, Martyn was Managing Director of IKODA Ltd and built the company from a start up to one of the largest independent upstream consulting groups dealing with some of the highest profile upstream deals over the past decade including the North Caspian PSA negotiations and awards to the OKIOC consortium and related deals including a half billion dollar disposal of these assets. Martyn negotiated the subsequent merger of IKODA with Petroleum Engineering consultants Troy Petroleum to form TROY-IKODA in January 2001. Martyn was Joint Managing director of the merged company with special responsibility for both Technology and Business development. In this capacity he led the de-merger the technology assets and team from TI to form IKON Science in April 2001and sold the TI business to the RPS Group.

He has a long term interest in the public role of Geoscience Technology and has provided this expertise on the board of a number of Industry R&D "think tanks" such as the Petroleum Science and Technology institute (PSTI) and Centre for Marine and Petroleum Technology (CMPT). He is currently a member of the Industry advisory board to Durham University Earth Sciences department. He has been a founding shareholder or director of a number of oil companies including the Africa focused AIM listed Fusion Oil and Gas plc and Virgo Energy plc a private oil and gas explorer sold to Encore oil plc in 2006.

Martyn has published many papers and articles and has been interviewed by publications such as the First Break, World Oil, and by major daily newspapers including the Financial Times and Scotland on Sunday. Martyn earned an Honours degree in Geology from Durham University UK and a post graduate certificate in Geophysics from Queen Mary College University of London. He is an active member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Institute of Petroleum, and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain.

Tom Hickey

Non-Executive Director
Tom Hickey has been Finance Director of Tullow Oil since May 2000. During this time Tullow has announced and completed the �201 million acquisition of a portfolio of Southern Gas Basin Assets from BP, moved its domicile from Dublin to the UK and recently entered the FTSE 250 Index.

Prior to joining Tullow, Tom was an associate director of ABN AMRO Corporate Finance in Dublin where he worked on a wide range of public and private fundraisings and provided mergers and acquisitions advice to a wide range of natural resource, technology and financial service companies. Tom qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen in Dublin and holds an Honours Commerce Degree from University College Dublin.

Henry Sallitt

Non-Executive Director

Henry Sallitt is co-head of FF&P Private Equity.  He has a long experience both of the direct private equity industry and within a commercial environment. 

Prior to joining FF&P Private Equity he was a Director of Quester, one of the largest technology investors in the UK.  This followed eight years at AFA Systems plc, a company which he co-founded as a private equity investor in 1995.  He joined AFA Systems full-time as CFO/COO in 1996 immediately prior to its IPO.  From its foundation, Henry was part of a small team that drove the development of the group, both organically and by acquisition, into a significant supplier of application software to the wholesale banking and investment management industries with over 120 customers in more than twenty countries worldwide.  This period included some of the most favourable trading conditions for financial software companies, but also some of the most challenging.  His experience reflects the diversity of issues that these two states created.  AFA was sold to Microgen plc in September 2004.  Henry sits on the board of OKA Direct, OB10 and Ikon Science.

Prior to AFA Systems, Henry spent six years investing in technology companies with Top Technology Limited, managers of the Hambros Advanced Technology Trust family of funds, which is now part of IP Group plc.  He qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse.

Tony Alves

Non-Executive Director
Tony has recently started a new Oil and Gas team at KBC Peel Hunt where he has joined after a 15 year career as principal oil sector analyst with Henderson Crosthwaite and Investec Securities. He is a graduate in mathematics from Cambridge University and has been working in the City, primarily in relation to the energy industry since 1982.

Andrew Armour

Non-Executive Director
Andrew Armour was appointed Executive Chairman of Revus Energy ASA, a new start Norwegian Oil and Gas Company, on its foundation in early 2003. He spent a large part of his career with Enterprise Oil plc, joining in 1984 as a Team Leader for the Central North Sea. He held a number of posts in the Enterprise organisation, including spending time in Business Development and as General Manager of the Norway office. At Enterprise he was appointed International Exploration Director in 1996, became Exploration and Production Director in 1999 and in January 2000 became Exploration Director. Andrew was responsible for the group's exploration and appraisal programme as well as for IT and Knowledge Management. He has a BSc in Geological Geophysics from Reading University and a PhD in Geophysics from Durham University. Prior to joining Enterprise Oil he worked for Shell International in Norway and Tunisia and Superior Oil in the UK.

Paul O'Brien

Executive Director, Sales & Marketing
After graduating from Manchester University with a Joint Honours degree in Physics & Geology Paul joined the Oil & Gas business in a technical role spending several years working both in the UK and Libya for a geophysical contractor (SSL) before joining the Sales and Marketing team.

Paul has always retained his strong technical background and in addition to being in a sales role for many years has been able to provide technical support and training courses over the years when the need arose.

Paul worked for some of the key players in the software business including Advance Geophysical, Landmark, CogniSeis, Paradigm and Schlumberger before joining Ikon Science in November 2005 as Sales Director EAME. Paul was promoted to the board as Executive Director, Sales & Marketing in October 2006.

Nick Pillar

Operations Director

Nick has over 25 year of experience in the oil industry. He started his career with Geophysical Services International (GSI) as a seismic data acquisition geophysicist through data processing as a Party Chief to Manager of GSI’s seismic interpretation systems. He joined Enterprise Oil in 1990 and became Chief Geophysicist in 2000.  After the Shell take over in 2002 he left to take up a role as a senior geophysical advisor with Petronas Carigali in Malaysia. In 2005 he joined Ikonscience as Chief Geophysicist and manager of the Quantitative Interpretation Team. As Operations Director he is responsible for the future development and expansion of the Software Development and Quantitative Interpretation Teams. His degree is in Applied Geology from the University of Strathclyde.

Andrew Paxton

Executive Finance Director
Andrew is a Chartered Accountant with over 30 years experience in the oil industry. He started his career with Clyde Petroleum in 1977 as one of the first employees and held a number of senior financial roles as the company grew from an unlisted entity with equity of about �3 million to its peak with a listed market value in excess of �600 million. In addition to heading the Finance Department, he had a period as Company Secretary, held the posts of Regional Manager for both North and South America and was a Director of the UK and Dutch operating businesses.

After a period in the energy group at Chemical Bank he joined Intrepid Energy as Finance Director and Company Secretary in 1996. Intrepid was a private company, funded by US institutions to participate in the UK sector of the North Sea. The company grew from its equity funding of $250 million through acquisitions and its interest in the Buzzard Field discovery, culminating in a successful sales process in 2004/5 which generated over $1.1 billion after tax for its stakeholders.

Since over-seeing the wind-up of Intrepid, Andrew has run his own consultancy company with a range of clients requiring assistance on corporate and tax matters. He has worked with Ikon for some months before accepting the role of Finance Director in April 2008 and continues to help Benfield, the insurance group, on specific energy-related projects.

Andrew has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Strathclyde and trained as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young in Glasgow, qualifying in 1976.

Mick Lambert

Executive Director, President Western Hemisphere
Mick is the former President and CEO of GX Technology Corporation (GXT), where he spent 16 years building GXT into a top-tier provider of advanced subsurface imaging services and products. Prior to his time at GXT, Mick spent 9 years with Seiscom Delta and 4 years with Cogniseis Development.

Alan Walmsley

Company Secretary
An Accountant with 24 years' experience in the oil & gas industry, ranging from oil platform construction through exploration/production to service companies. Having held senior accounting and administration positions with IKODA, Petroleum Information and Elf UK.

Alan has been involved in the management of oil exploration information companies in the UK, and helped set up similar companies in Spain and Ireland, releasing Well Log data to the oil and gas industry on behalf of their respective governments. During part of his time at Elf he was involved in onshore and offshore exploration joint ventures including financial control of Elf operated drilling programmes.

Paul O'Brien

Executive Director, Sales & Marketing

Michel Kemper

Development Director
A petroleum engineer with 21 years experience in Geophysics, Petrophysics and Reservoir Engineering. The first 13 years were spent with Shell International in The Hague, Nigeria and London, during which time Michel made contributions to the interface between Petrophysics and Geophysics. In May 1999 he became team leader Petrophysics/Petroacoustics at Ikoda Limited, working on a wide variety of projects. It is during this time that RokDoc - now one of Ikon Science's main products - was started. One of the co-founders of Ikon Science, he is now responsible for the incorporation of latest techniques and developments in the area of rock physics in the Ikon Science software portfolio.

Richard Swarbrick

Managing Director - GeoPressure Technology
Before founding GeoPressure Technology, Dr Richard Swarbrick completed a PhD in sedimentology/tectonics at Cambridge University, and subsequently worked as a geologist for Mobil for ten years from 1979. During that time he worked in exploration and production assignments in both the UK and USA.

In 1989 he began teaching petroleum geology and related courses at the University of Durham where he continues to be involved in research and teaching.

Between 1994 and 2001, Dr Richard Swarbrick was also the principal investigator of GeoPOP (GEOsciences Project into OverPressure), a multi-disciplinary research group funded by 16 oil/gas companies.

Richard has taught courses in many of oil centres around the world, either as open courses or in-house training companies. He consults widely and continues to present conference papers and publish articles relating to sub-surface pressures.
