"Challenge of Pressure Prediction in Deep Exploration Targets" presented by Prof. Richard Swarbrick.
Abstract: As drilling moves to deeper targets (as well as deeper water) as the last frontiers of exploration for remaining hydrocarbon reserves, the challenge of pressure prediction becomes more acute. Traditional porosity and/or effective stress-based prediction of pore pressures works well in low temperature, fine-grained clastics (shales, claystones) but progressively under-estimates pore pressures when chemical compaction and fluid expansion processes generate additional overpressures. Unde...

"A stratigraphic prospect – reducing the risk" presented by Ed Townend of Ikon Science at SEG 2009; 29 October at 9.45am
Summary Rock physics is the bridge between well and seismic data. This link is demonstrated on a Paleocene prospect in the UK North Sea that appears to be entirely stratigraphic. The likelihood of finding hydrocarbons has been significantly improved through the use of rock physics analysis, seismic inversion and a detailed analysis of seismic gather data.

Shared earth model to live earth model: Deeper integration through understanding the rocks - Drs Michel Kemper
Let me take you back fifteen years, to the start of 1994. At that time, integration was a great buzz word in exploration and production. There were integrated multi-disciplinary teams in the larger and more progressive oil companies and people were looking into how software technology might be harnessed to push forward this integration.

Seal breach, fluid expulsion and a mud volcano in East Java
Houston seminar: 30th September, 2008 Richard Swarbrick PhD GeoPressure Technology, Ikon Science "Seal breach, fluid expulsion and a mud volcano in East Java" Abstract: Some valid traps have hydrocarbons present, some have not. There are a number of possible explanations including lack of a mature source rock, late trap development and migration "shadow" as well as loss of hydrocarbons which enter the trap. Loss of hydrocarbons through a seal may involve hydrocarbon buoyancy (membrane leakage...

Some Challenges in Modeling Drilling Geomechanics in Complex Reservoirs
Houston seminar: 30th September, 2008 Elan Yogeswaren PE PhD GeoMechanics Technology Group, Ikon Science "Some Challenges in Modeling Drilling Geomechanics in Complex Reservoirs" Abstract: As oil and gas exploration begins to tap complex reservoirs such as those in deep water subsalt plays or complex tectonic stress domains, or in unconventional assets such as oil shale, challenges and opportunities in cost control are presented. These can be mitigated by the application of optimal technology...
