Since the first well was drilled in the Barents Sea in 1980, discoveries have been made proving that a viable petroleum system exists. Subsequently, one producing field (Snohvit) and oil accumulations such as Goliat (to start production in 2013), Nucula and Obesum further demonst... Read More.
In the November issue of The Leading Edge, Prof. Richard Swarbrick discusses a range of pore pressure prediction methods and how they can be modified for use at elevated temperatures e.g. above 100°C. This review also highlights the wide uncertainty inherent in conventional approaches to prediction in some regions, which may require an entirely different approach to pore pressure prediction prior to drilling. Exploration in the West of Shetlands Basin spans nearly 40 years however, despite all the interest commercial successes have often been limited, although fields such as, Clair, Victory, Foinaven, Schiehallion and Suilven exist. A success and failure analysis by Loizou et al. (200... Read More.
This paper demonstrates how automatic fault extraction from seismic data can be used to accurately define a fault network within a fractured basement reservoir. For this case study, a fault network was initially manually interpreted from 3D seismic data after which automated faul... Read More.
Bayesian classification is applied by combining the AI/EI inversions and rock physics probability maps to map the most likely of the gas sand reservoir distributions in the Tombak gas feild area. The result shows several good distributions of gas sands reservoir typical of a channel associated with the low EI while the seismic attributes amplitude shows a good match with the gas sand reservoirs distribution interval. Where the drilling window (pore pressure/mud-weight minus fracture pressure) is narrow, borehole stability problems are commonly encountered. For instance, in the Malay Basin, wells such as Bergading Deep and Sepat Deep-1 encountered High Pressure/High Temperature conditions, cau... Read More.
